Executive Principal’s Update

Kia ora, Talofa, Bula vinaka, Malo e lelei, Fakatālofa atu kia te koulua, Kia orana, Hallo, Hola, Ni Hao, Namaste and Greetings - parents, caregivers and families of Whitby Collegiate.

As we inch towards the end of the term this last week has seen such a lot of activity both in and outside the classroom. It has certainly been one of the busiest stretches of the term and I have been very proud of those students who have embodied the "Whitby Way" and being such proud ambassadors for the school. This was certainly to the fore at the presentation last Saturday at the NIWA Science competition where Whitby Collegiate scored three out the four major prizes and more recently the performances of our teams and individual athletes at the AIMS Games.

We were thrilled to once again host the Science Roadshow at Whitby Collegiate, such a hands-on, interactive experience that brought the wonders of science to life for our students. It was an exciting introduction to the sciences that sparked curiosity and enthusiasm across our junior year levels. Thank you to all our wonderful student helpers who hosted the other schools in the region and a heartfelt thank you to Mr Vowles for his unwavering passion and leadership in this area. His commitment to fostering scientific inquiry continues to inspire our learners and enrich our curriculum.

We have felt incredibly privileged to spend time this week, supporting our talented teams across a range of codes—from netball and futsal to swimming and tennis. Watching our students compete with heart, resilience, and sportsmanship was inspiring. Whether they brought home medals or memories, they represented Whitby Collegiate with pride and integrity. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support behind the scenes. A huge thank you to all our parent supporters, team managers, and coaches who gave their time, energy, and encouragement so generously. Your commitment is the foundation of our success.

I would like to make special mention of our exceptional student coaches who have risen to the challenge of taking on a group of young athletes to bring out their best in their performance. Well done to Chloe Mattock who led our Futsal team to their first-ever wins at the AIMS Games and being first equal in their section. The boys Futsal team showed true sportsmanship and spirit across the whole week. Petro Goosen and Hatti Jones have poured their hearts into coaching our Netball team, and it was a true delight to see the players respond so positively to their guidance and role modelling. Their dedication and positivity will have left a lasting impact. A special mention must also go to the individual athletes Alina Babko and Caspar Fifield in Tennis and Alistair Bai in swimming who all gave their absolute best.

This coming week we will welcome members of our community and supporters of the school to our Gala dinner on Friday. We are incredibly grateful to Julie Sellar and her team at the Foundation for putting on such a fantastic event and know that with Sir Michael Jones as our guest speaker we are in for a special night.

CHAPLAIN’S NOTE

This morning, as I was praying for the school, my mind went to Philippians 4:7, which speaks of God’s peace—“which exceeds anything we can understand.”

As we prepare for derived-grade examinations, face the pile of work that comes at the end of term, and scroll through world news and social media, we need this kind of peace. The key is found in the verses just before: rejoice, don’t be anxious, and bring your prayers to God.

May you know this peace. May it truly go beyond your understanding.

Teachers’ Highlight

It has been a privilege to be part of this year's AIMs Games journey with 26 incredible young men and women who have proudly represented their school, their whānau, and themselves with distinction.

Alistair Bai (7SV) achieved 10 top 10 placings, Alina Babko 7SV) and Caspar Fifield (7NA) produced good outcomes on the tennis courts. The Futsal Team, produced a 3-3 in their final and the Netball team produced a 34 - 3 result in their final.

Throughout the last week of competition at AIMs Games, these athletes have displayed excellence—not only in their results, but also in their resilience and unwavering respect: for themselves, for their managers, and for their opposition. Their spirit and positive attitude shone through in every game and race, making them a true credit to our school community and to their parents and caregivers.

I couldn’t be prouder of this team. They have embodied everything we hope for in our young athletes and leaders of tomorrow, showing the 'Whitby Way' in every way.

Lastly, thank you to Mr Fiso and Ms Addison for an awesome dinner at Barrio Brothers in Tauranga.

Whitby Collegiate Year 7 & 8 Netball Team

Our Junior A Netball team are on a roll at the AIMS Games, celebrating four straight wins so far. Big highlights include a 32–3 victory over Iona College and a strong 38–4 result against Eskdale School. The team are showing real determination and spirit, and it’s great to see their hard work paying off on court. A huge thank you to our coaches and student coach for their guidance and support along the way.

Whitby Collegiate Futsal Team

The Futsal team kicked off their tournament with a tight 2–1 win against ACG Tauranga and went on to finish with a thrilling 3–3 draw in their final. It was an incredible display of sportsmanship and teamwork, showing just how far they’ve come through the competition. We also extend our thanks to the coaching team and student coach for the time and their support throughout the games.
