Kia ora, e te whānau - parents, caregivers and families of Whitby Collegiate,

Congratulations to our Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) students who last Friday night pitched their products to the YES judges as part of the regional finals. We were very proud of both teams, with Sam S and Toby K gaining a top 4 finish out of 98 teams in the Sales and Marketing category for their brand The Saucery, and Ciaran B, Jordan H and Lior A winning the overall greater Wellington regional final for Ecotopia and their sustainable cleaning products. This qualifies them for the national finals to be held in December. Amazing work by both teams and this of course would not have been possible without the support of Mrs Lindsay and the work she does as part of our Economics and Business Studies programme.

Even with a short week, there was plenty of activity around the school. We acknowledged student achievement in assembly this week with pastoral and academic awards and presented Gabriel S his gold medal for winning the College Sport Wellington Athletics with his record breaking High Jump. Students have also been working hard on their House activities and gaining those all important House points. It is going to be a close race for the final winners. We are also looking forward to the upcoming College Sport Wellington Sports Awards with the largest number of student athletes nominated ever from Whitby Collegiate. Finalists will be announced next week.

As seniors complete their final internal assessments this week, we are really into the pointy end of the year for seniors. Once again I have been so impressed with the calibre of work from the Art students, as this week we were able to view the photography portfolios with some truly stunning work from Danial P, Riley F and Ella M. We will be farewelling our Year 13 students next week with an afternoon tea on Wednesday followed by the Leavers’ Dinner on Friday 25 November and welcome parents to the school prizegiving on Wednesday 6 December. This will be held at the school this year and we will also be live streaming the event, as we did last year.

A special welcome to our Proprietors’ Board on Wednesday to the school for a Board meeting, and they enjoyed seeing the progress around the school, in particular, our new build, and touching base with our student body. We thank them for all their support during the year and for providing the guidance that the school needs on an ongoing basis.

Next week is shaping up to be another busy week, with the junior sports programme taking off and plenty of Whitby Collegiate teams involved in a variety of codes. We also welcome families to the Music Showcase on Tuesday night and if the sounds coming from the music room over the past week are anything to go by, it is going to be a great night seeing the creative talent of our students.

DEPUTIES’ UPDATES

From the Deputy Principal (Academics)

And just like that, we are at the end of the last full week of the year for our senior students. 

This week our Exam Centre Manager Mrs Helen Moran visited the school to meet the examination candidates to give them their NCEA exam briefing. Students had a rundown of what to expect from the exams and how to abide by the NZQA guidelines, and were given the NCEA Candidate Information Sheet with rules and instructions for the exams. Students must notify the school if they are running late for an exam - they cannot enter the exam room more than 30 minutes late and no extra time will be given. If a student is unable to take an exam for an acceptable reason (a serious illness / injury / bereavement etc), then they may be eligible to apply for a Derived Grade and should contact me immediately. More information about the Derived Grade application process can be found here. Application forms for Derived Grades can be found on the NZQA website, at the school office, and on our website.

As the NCEA examinations are very similar to how we run our school exams, our students should be prepared. The biggest change is that all students will need to bring their NCEA admission slip with them to all exams. Students must have their Admission Slip for each exam. Admission slips have been issued to all students who were present at the exam briefing on Wednesday; all students who were absent on that day will have an exam briefing with me soon. If a student loses or defaces this admission slip they must see me for a replacement which I will authenticate prior to the start of the exam. Additionally, all Scholarship students must have a photo ID for their examinations.

Next week, all senior students will be emailed, as well as parents/caregivers, a copy of the tutorial timetable, set up by teachers, so that students are able to come into school and get extra help in the lead up to their exams. This is a live document, with tutorials constantly being added, so please check your emails for access to this document. Students are reminded that, for health and safety reasons, when coming into school they need to sign in at the school office, and they are expected to be wearing their full school uniform. 

For extra information about the NCEA examinations, including the digital exams for English, History, Spanish, Te reo Māori, and Chinese, please visit nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/ncea. For the digital language examinations, students must bring headphones. Once again a reminder about the information on NCEA student exam hub with exam tips, reminders about digital devices, and links to other resources. Other useful resources include studyit.govt.nz and studytime.co.nz.

Vintage/Recycle Boutique Evening - Softball Team Fundraiser

Whitby Collegiate's softball team will be travelling to Japan in September 2023 to play a series of matches in Osaka and Tokyo. The team is fundraising to assist with travel expenses and would love your support.
