Whitby Collegiate welcomes international students from Years 7–13 to join our vibrant learning community in Wellington, New Zealand.
As Wellington's first independent, co-educational school for Years 7–13, Whitby Collegiate provides a personalised education that combines academic excellence with exceptional pastoral care. Our small class sizes, dedicated teachers and strong values-based culture ensure every student is known, supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential.
We are proud to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where international students quickly become part of the school community. Students are supported both academically and personally as they adapt to life in New Zealand, develop confidence in English, and build lifelong friendships with students from around the world.
At Whitby Collegiate, we believe education extends beyond the classroom. Students have opportunities to participate in a wide range of academic, sporting, cultural, leadership and service programmes, preparing them to become confident, capable and globally minded young people.
All international students are cared for in accordance with New Zealand's Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, ensuring they receive a high standard of academic and pastoral support throughout their time at Whitby Collegiate.
International students may live with a parent or legal guardian, an approved Designated Caregiver, or in a Whitby-approved homestay arrangement.
We welcome applications from international students throughout the year, subject to availability.
Steps to Apply
Step 1: Contact the enrolment team by email
We encourage you to contact our Enrolment Officer, who will be happy to answer your questions, understand your child's educational goals, and guide you through the enrolment process.
Step 2: Submit your enquiry application
Complete the online application and upload the required supporting documents.
Required Documents
Completed Application Form
Copy of the student's passport
Recent passport-style photograph
School reports and academic transcripts from the previous two years (translated into English where required)
Latest immunisation records (translated into English where required)
Personal video statement or handwritten letter introducing the student and explaining why they would like to study at Whitby Collegiate in English.
Evidence of extracurricular achievements (where applicable)
English language assessment results (if available)
Step 3: Application Review
Our Enrolment Team will review your application to assess:
Academic history
English language competency
Supporting documentation
Student suitability
If further information is required, our team will contact you.
Step 4: Student & Parent Interview
Suitable applicants may be invited to attend an online interview via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Parents or guardians are strongly encouraged to attend. If an interpreter is required, it is the responsibility of the family to arrange one.
The interview provides an opportunity for us to:
Meet the student and family
Learn more about the student's interests and goals
Assess English communication
Answer any questions about studying at Whitby Collegiate and living in New Zealand
Step 5: Receive an Offer of Place
Following the selection process, if your application is successful, Whitby Collegiate will issue:

Acceptance Form
International Student Fees Invoice
Information about the next steps
Please complete and return the Acceptance of Offer documentation within 14 days of receiving your Offer of Place. The Offer of Place must be accepted, and all associated fees paid, within the timeframe specified in the Offer Letter.
Step 6: Confirm Your Enrolment
Once payment of the required fees has been received, Whitby Collegiate will issue a Confirmation of Enrolment Letter, which can be used to support the student's visa application.
To accept your place, you will need to:
Accept the Offer of Place
Pay the required tuition fees
Confirm accommodation arrangements
Arrange medical and travel insurance
Apply for your New Zealand Student Visa

Visa and Immigration
International students must hold a valid New Zealand student visa before commencing their studies at Whitby Collegiate.
For information on visa requirements, application processes, visa conditions and work rights, please visit Immigration New Zealand.
Insurance
All international students are required to hold appropriate and current medical and travel insurance for the full duration of their studies in New Zealand, in accordance with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.
Students may arrange their own insurance policy, provided it meets New Zealand's requirements for international students.
Proof of valid insurance must be provided before a student commences their studies.

Whitby Collegiate is committed to providing a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for all international students.
As a signatory to the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021, Whitby Collegiate meets the standards set by the New Zealand Government to ensure the wellbeing, safety and support of international students throughout their educational journey.
The Code sets out the responsibilities of education providers in relation to the care and wellbeing of international students, including accommodation, safety, information, support services and student welfare.

Eligibility for Health Services
At Whitby Collegiate, the health and wellbeing of our students is a priority.
International students should be aware that they are generally not eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand and may be responsible for the full cost of any medical treatment they receive. For this reason, all international students are required to hold appropriate medical and travel insurance for the duration of their studies.
Some students may be eligible for publicly funded healthcare under specific circumstances. We encourage families to check their eligibility before travelling to New Zealand.
