Life at Whitby Collegiate

School life beyond the classroom is full of exciting options. It’s an important part of helping our students be well-rounded and active, happily participating in all sorts of activities.

We offer a range of teams and clubs students can be involved with, including sport, music and cultural activities.

Extracurricular activities are on the go throughout the year, and if there is an activity we don’t offer that our students are keen on, we do our best to make it an option, either at school or by partnering with local teams clubs.

Hauora (Wellbeing)

We believe if students are well cared for pastorally, they will experience success in other areas of their lives.

Student hauora (wellbeing) is strengthened through our Tutor Group, Peer Support, Mentoring and House activities. A strong wellbeing culture has helped our students develop their individual mana as well as resilience and respect for each other and their teachers.

The House system is a popular and energetic part of life at Whitby Collegiate. We have a lot of House-based activities throughout the year where students compete in sporting, cultural and fundraising events. House events are always colourful, fun and competitive, where students learn the power of team spirit and coming together for a common goal.

Special Character

We are a co-educational, faith-based school founded on Christian values and beliefs. Students of all faiths and backgrounds are welcomed and valued.

Although we are not linked to any particular denomination, students are encouraged to live Christian values such as kindness, respect, compassion and service.

The relationship between staff and students is also fundamental to the special character of our school. This is a trusted connection where academic and pastoral staff work closely with students, monitoring their progress, ensuring specific needs are met and passions are encouraged and acknowledged.

Extension Opportunities

We’ve developed a comprehensive Extensions Programme for those students who wish to be stretched beyond our established curriculum. They receive extended support within their classrooms as well as access to a range of extra-curricular cultural and sporting activities including ICAS, Otago Maths, Science Crest Awards, Royal Society Events, Essay and Speech Competitions.

School to Community

We consciously look for ways to build and grow our communities, locally and globally because it’s important our students feel part of a wider world, contributing and assisting wherever they can. We have a number of programmes where students can learn and volunteer in a range of environments and cultures. It’s all part of helping students understand what it means to be a truly global citizen.

Leadership

Leadership takes many forms and students at Whitby Collegiate are guided to areas that suit their strengths and interests. We have been very considered about developing leadership opportunities that work well in a school environment and also out in the real world.

We support our student leaders to develop their own leadership styles, looking for ways to bring people together, motivating others towards a common goal, striving for success and understanding responsibility.
